Five Twists On An Old Fashioned

“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” We agree, but the 140-year-old Old Fashioned is overdue for a freshening up. This well-loved whiskey cocktail had been in vogue for a number of years and was officially dubbed the Old-Fashioned by the Chicago Tribune in 1881. Considering the Old Fashioned has been old-fashioned for more than a hundred years, we’re giving it a little makeover.

Rediscover a truly classic cocktail with these five twists on the Old-Fashioned, curated by our team from various bloggers and bourbon enthusiasts and using our Joseph Magnus Bourbon: 

Warm Old-Fashioned

Enjoy the Old Fashioned year-round.

  • 2 oz Joseph Magnus Bourbon 
  • 1 sugar cube 
  • 3 dashes of Angostura Bitters
  • 1 orange slice
  • 1 maraschino cherry
  • Splash of club soda 
  • 2 oz hot water

New Old-Fashioned

You say oxymoron, we say delicious. 

  • 2.5 oz Joseph Magnus Bourbon
  • 1 tbsp simple syrup
  • 5 dashes of bitters
  • 2 peach slices
  • 2 blackberries
  • Splash of sparkling water

Smoked Old-Fashioned

Fruity, smokey… delicious. 

  • .5 oz simple syrup
  • 2 oz Joseph Magnus Bourbon
  • 2 dashes orange bitters 
  • Orange peel
  • Ice

Vanilla Old-Fashioned Cocktail

It’s vanilla, but there’s nothing ordinary about this cocktail. 

  • Orange peel
  • Vanilla bean split in half
  • 2 oz Joseph Magnus Bourbon 
  • .5-1 tbsp vanilla syrup 
  • 2 drops orange water enhancer 
  • Club Soda

Cinnamon Old Fashioned

Spice up your life. 

Cinnamon Syrup 

  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • ½ cup water 
  • 1 cup sugar

 

Cinnamon Old Fashioned 

  • 2 oz Joseph Magnus Bourbon
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • .5 oz cinnamon syrup 
  • Orange twist
  • Cinnamon stick, for garnish
