The much anticipated U.S. Open Championship will be held next weekend at Torrey Pines, positioned atop cliffs towering above the Pacific Ocean. Joseph Magnus — interestingly — was connected to and interested in the game of golf. He built a golf course in 1910 in Oden, Michigan, where he had a summer home. The course, known as the Oden Boat and Golf Club, was located on the shores of Lake Michigan and included a rustic arched bridge used by pedestrians to access docks along the lake. If you’re watching the tournament this weekend, kick back with these course-ready cocktails inspired by the game and featuring Jos. A. Magnus & Co. spirits.
The Birdie
This cocktail may be sub-par, but in the best possible way….
- 1.75 oz Joseph Magnus Vigilant Distinct Dry Gin
- .5 oz Thatcher’s Organic Elderflower Liqueur
- ⅔ oz lime juice
- ⅓ oz simple syrup
- 5 fresh mint leaves
Full recipe and instructions here.
John Daly
Legendary golfer Arnold Palmer pioneered one of the most well-known and popular non-alcoholic drinks on the market, a mix of lemonade and iced tea. Palmer was a crowd favorite and won the U.S. Open Championship in 1960. This cocktail is named for a lesser known, yet fully uncorked golfer, John Daly. It’s inspired by Daly’s affinity for drinking and playing golf.
- 1.5 oz Joseph Magnus Straight Bourbon Whiskey
- 2 oz sweet tea
- 2 oz lemonade
Full recipe and instructions adapted from here.
The Bogey
Joseph Magnus enjoyed Lake Michigan during sunny Michigan summers, but when he hit the links at the Oden Boat and Golf Club, perhaps he enjoyed the waterfront location a little less? Shots may drift into the drink this weekend, but this cocktail pairs well with professionals slamming and smashing their clubs in anger.
- 1 oz Joseph Magnus Vigilant Navy Strength Gin
- 1 oz dry vermouth
- .25 oz Joseph Magnus Murray Hill Club Bourbon Whiskey
- .25 oz pastis
- 1 dash fresh lemon juice
Full recipe and instructions here.
