Maintaining Quality Bourbon

When you choose to enjoy a dram of Joseph Magnus Bourbon, your choice honors the Magnus heritage of distilling, blending and finishing that began with the first bottle dated May 1892. Today, we are entrusted with what Joseph Magnus called, “the pride of the still,” which is why we strive to make every bottle you select stand up to that legacy from the first to the last pour. Our distilling and blending team wants to help you preserve the best of the Magnus tradition by offering a few points on properly storing all your Joseph Magnus expressions. When friends come to call, we hope you can generously share not just bourbon, but the Joseph Magnus legacy of quality and distinction.

1. Limit exposure to light.  Especially direct sunlight. The esters and flavor compounds will degrade over time with prolonged exposure to light. Storing whiskey in a dark room is best, whether that’s a cabinet, cellar, or even a box.

2. Limit temperature fluctuations as much as possible.  Storing your whiskey where the temperature is the most consistent might mean putting a top shelf product in the bottom shelf. The important thing is to keep the temperature constant and no warmer than room temperature if possible.

3. Limit oxygen.  This is only necessary if you plan to keep a bottle around for more than two years. This can be done in any number of ways, including using a vacuum sealer or decanting into smaller containers to limit oxidation. It may not look as cool, but it’s worth it to protect the product.

4. Always store your bottles upright.  Never store your bourbon horizontally. This is because spirits can actually degrade the cork and impart off flavors. You can wet the corks once or twice a year by resting the bottle on its side for an hour or so. Although most of the time the alcohol vapors in the bottle should be enough to ensure a well-kept, moist cork.

All that being said, we encourage you to seize the day and drink those precious bottles amongst friends and whiskey lovers as often as possible. Find a bottle of Joseph Magnus near you, or purchase our spirits online directly. Remember to always enjoy and preserve your spirits responsibly!
